Bioplastic Lego
LEGO has moved on from bendy bioplastic to making a new prototype block that is fabricated from PET plastic from discarded bottles.

Made with a plant-based material sourced from sugarcane the bioplastic collection is the first step towards the companys ultimate goal to produce all products and packaging with sustainable materials by 2030. Lego has tested hundreds of different plastic variations. The LEGO bricks in the Botanical Collection are made from plant-based polyethylene a type of bioplastic which is derived from ethically-sourced sugarcane.

One of the most ubiquitous and best-loved toys of all time LEGO is also heavily reliant on plastic. Lego has had some success with plastic partly made of plants. In order to dramatically reduce its impact on the planet LEGO could potentially make their signature bricks out of hemp bioplastic instead of traditional plastic material.
Lego making slow but steady progress towards 2030 sustainable materials goal. The LEGO Group has partnered with WWF to support and build demand for sustainably sourced plastic and has joined the Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance BFA an initiative of WWF to secure fully sustainable sourcing of raw material for the bioplastics industry. Materials classified as bioplastic like Legos sugarcane polyethylene are plastics sourced from natural materials but arent necessarily biodegradable.
The LEGO group is spending over 100M to replace its current plastic type for a more sustainable one and theres a new generation of environmentally-friendly biobased toys cropping up. The Lego Groups decision to pursue sustainably sourced bio-based plastics represents an incredible opportunity to reduce dependence on finite resources and their work with the Bioplastic.
